With “Sequencing Hellish Cataclysm”, MORDANT ETCH make their first, violent statement, unveiling a debut demo that immediately sets them apart within the extreme metal underground. The project brings together members of Reekmind, the formidable Australian death/sludge/doom metal entity known for its suffocating atmospheres and monolithic riffs, here joined by Marc of Spain’s Trollcave / Sanctuarium, who handled drum recordings for this release. The result is a leaner, sharper incarnation of the same creative core, channeled into a far more direct and corrosive form.
Where Reekmind often allows its material to spiral into murky, oppressive depths, MORDANT ETCH strip things down to the bone. “Sequencing Hellish Cataclysm” thrives on short, tightly wound tracks that hit hard and move fast, blending the blunt force of death metal with faint but telling traces of blackened hostility and the sheer urgency of grindcore. This is music that wastes no time, yet never feels rushed or careless. Each song is built with a clear sense of intent, balancing aggression with structure and avoiding the pitfalls of a one-dimensional assault.
Despite its brevity and ferocity, the demo reveals a surprising attention to riffcraft and dynamics. Jagged, cutting guitar lines anchor the songs, shifting between crushing momentum and sudden, abrasive turns, while the drumming pushes everything forward with relentless precision. Rather than overwhelming the listener through sheer excess, MORDANT ETCH maintain tension by knowing exactly when to strike and when to pull back, giving the material a sense of shape and memorability that lingers beyond its running time.
“Sequencing Hellish Cataclysm” is a debut that leaves a mark: concise, vicious, and purposeful. It introduces MORDANT ETCH as a new force capable of delivering extreme music that is both immediate and thoughtfully constructed. A first offering of undeniable impact, it marks the arrival of a band that demands attention and stands as a name worth watching closely as the future unfolds.
